Half a house is enough

The brief was to open the ground floor completely. We opened half of it. The front room faces the street, gets sun until eleven and has a chimney breast worth keeping — knocking it through would have bought one long room and lost the only quiet room in the house. The back is now one space and the front is still a door you can close.

The door that stayed
The kitchen runs along the party wall, where there was never going to be a window. It is the cheapest wall in the house and it carries everything.
The stair was reversed rather than moved. It cost a fortnight and saved the only structural wall on the plan.

Open plan is a decision about which rooms you are willing to lose.

The chimney breast in the front room is the reason it stayed a room. Removing it was costed at four figures and would have bought one long space nobody asked for.
