A hard room is not automatically a good one

Everyone who visits an empty pool hall says the acoustic is wonderful. It is not — it is long, and long is only wonderful for about four seconds before it turns into mud. The tile stays because it is the building, but every surface that is not tile is now doing acoustic work, and the ceiling is doing most of it.

The main hall, floor laid level with the old pool edge.

Original tile, cleaned not replaced
Where it was beyond saving, plain plaster
The rafts are hung clear of the vault so the roof reads as one piece from the floor. They are also the only part of the room a musician ever asks about.
Changing cubicles, kept as practice rooms
Doors reversed to open outward

The building was already loud. The work was teaching it when to stop.

Project note

End to end, with the rafts in.

The new floor sits at the old pool edge, so the tiled coping is now a skirting. It is the only line in the building that explains what the room used to be.
A practice room, on the old plant side
Doubled stud, because tile does not stop sound

The foyer, which was the ticket hall and needed nothing.
